About the Mascot
- The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games mascot is styled with the Ai (indigo blue) Ichimatsu pattern from the Tokyo 2020 Games emblem, a tribute to both the respected tradition and modern innovation of Japanese culture.
- MIRAITOWA has a personality inspired by the Japanese proverb, “learn from the past and develop new ideas”.
- MIRAITOWA is cheerful and remarkably athletic, with a very strong sense of integrity. It has a special power to instantly teleport anywhere it wants.
- The origin of the name MIRAITOWA is based on the Japanese words “mirai“, meaning “future”, and “towa“, meaning “eternity”, representing the wish that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will lead to a future of everlasting hope in the hearts of everyone around the world.
Indian Contingent at the Olympics
- India’s Olympic contingent for Tokyo 2020 included 127 participants from 18 sports, including two alternate players and one reserve goalie in men’s and women’s hockey squads, respectively. However it was a group of 228 members who represented the Indian Contingent.
- India made its debut in two events: women’s fencing and equestrian.
- Wrestler Bajrang Punia was the designated flag bearer for India in the closing ceremony, while boxing star Mary Kom and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh being India’s flag bearers in the opening ceremony.
- India won a record total of seven medals and finished at 48th rank in the tally.USA topped the medal tally list followed by China and Japan respectively.
- India won 1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze.

About the medal winners
- Neeraj Chopra (Haryana)
Neeraj Chopra secured India’s second individual gold in Olympic history with a sensational throw of 87.58m in the men’s javelin final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.He is also the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in athletics event.His coach was Uwe Hohn, the German athlete who has the eternal record of crossing 100 m mark in Javelin Throw.His win on August 7, will be celebrated as National Javelin Day by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
- Ravi Kumar Dahiya (Haryana)
He is the second Indian wrestler after Sushil Kumar to win an Olympic silver medal.The 23 year old wrestler won the silver medal after a rough and tough match of 4-7 against Russian Zavur Uguev.
Ravi is the fourth Indian male wrestler, and fifth overall, to win a medal at the Olympics.
- Mirabai Chanu (Manipur)
This 26 year old clinched her maiden Olympic silver medal on the Day 1 of Tokyo Olympics itself giving the Indians a hope in the Games. She bagged silver after she had lifted 202 kg (87 kg + 115 kg) in the 49 kg category.The gold went in the hands of China’s Hou Zhihui with an effort of 210kg (94kg+116kg) , while Windy Cantika Aisah from Indonesia won the bronze with a lift of 194kg (84kg+110kg). Mirabai is the 3rd Indian female athlete to win a Olympic medal in a row after PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik
- PV Sindhu (Hyderabad)
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is the only Indian to win 2 consecutive Olympic medal.Sindhu defeated He Bingjiao of China 21-13, 21-15 in the women’s Badminton singles bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics. Sindhu’s badminton bronze was India’s second medal at Tokyo 2020 after Mirabai Chanu’s silver.
- Bajrang Punia (Haryana)
This Indian Freestyle wrestler won the bronze after defeating Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov with a margin of 8-0 in the 65 kg category. He is the only Indian to win 3 medals at the World Wrestling Championships. Bajrang’s bronze medal is the 7th medal in wrestling at the Olympics for India.
- Indian Men’s Hockey Team
The win at the Tokyo Olympics finally broke a 41 year old jinx that defeated Germany in 5-4. The last win by the Hockey team was in 1980. The 16 member team was led by mid-fielder Manpreet Singh.
In the quarters India beat Great Britain 3-1 to enter the semis, however lost in that match against Belgium for 2-5. Hence it resulted in the bronze medal match between India and Germany where India bagged its 12th Olympic medal in men’s Hockey event.

- Lovlina Borgohain (Assam)
The 23-year-old from the Baro Mukhia village in Golaghat district became the only third Indian boxer to finish on the Olympic podium, joining two of the biggest icons in Indian boxing — six-time world champion M C Mary Kom and the very decorated Vijender Singh.Borgohain (69kg) signed off with a bronze medal in her debut Olympic Games after a 0-5 loss to reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey. In the quarter-final, Lovlina was up against the former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Taiwan.
